Bob Kebede, Frankfurts first black barber, shares the story of his barbershop, which is closely intertwined with the experience of growing up as a Black man in Germany. His narrative speaks of the challenges as well as the beautiful moments that come with our specific experience as Black people in this country. His words convey the the longing for identity and belonging that lie at the heart of this very experience. The interview takes place in his barbershop and is accompanied by illustrations of the community around the shop. These illustrations are based on photos which have been taken at the shop over the years.
I myself am also part of the community as well as the narrative. The film has a very clear goal: to make our stories heard. It is my contribution to the endeavor of granting our experiences the acknowledgement that they deserve.
